1. Who We Are

The Regret Index (“we,” “our,” or “the Platform”) is operated by Regret Index Ltd. We collect and process data to operate the world’s first searchable database of human decision outcomes. Questions about this policy can be directed to privacy@regretindex.com.

2. Data We Collect

  • Account data: Name and email address when you register.
  • Submission data: The decision descriptions, categories, outcomes, and regret scores you submit to the archive. This data is anonymised before public display.
  • Usage data: Pages visited, search queries, and interaction events (upvotes, bookmarks). Collected for analytics and service improvement.
  • Technical data: IP address, browser type, device identifiers. Collected automatically on each request.

3. How We Use Your Data

  • To operate and personalise the Platform.
  • To show aggregated, anonymised decision outcome data to other users.
  • To send follow-up requests (opt-in only) to update your submission at 1, 3, and 5-year intervals.
  • To understand how the Platform is used and improve it.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

4. Anonymisation of Submissions

All submissions are processed to remove personally identifiable information before entering the public archive. We retain a mapping between your account and your submissions only for the purpose of follow-ups (if you opted in) and content moderation. This mapping is never shared externally.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We may share data with:

  • Infrastructure providers: MongoDB Atlas (database), Vercel (hosting), Resend (email). All are bound by data processing agreements.
  • Researchers: Aggregated, anonymised datasets may be licensed to academic institutions. No personal data is included.
  • Law enforcement: Only where required by law, and only the minimum data necessary.

6. Data Retention

Account data is retained until you delete your account. Submission data, once anonymised and published, is retained indefinitely as part of the archive, even after account deletion, because it no longer contains personal data.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to: access or delete your personal data, correct inaccurate data, object to processing, or request data portability. To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@regretindex.com.

8. Cookies

We use only functional and analytics cookies. No advertising cookies are set. You can block cookies in your browser settings without affecting core Platform functionality (some preferences may not persist).

9. Changes to This Policy

Material changes to this policy will be communicated via email to registered users at least 14 days before taking effect. Continued use of the Platform after that date constitutes acceptance.
